Criminology
- punishment and freedom

Why do we punish? Does punishment work? How do we punish in Norway, and in other parts of the world? What exactly is punishment?
This is the course for those of you who want to learn more about everything related to punishment, laws, rules, crime and order . We visit courts and prisons , attend trials , and talk to the police .
We also look at shelters, violence alarms, identity change and protection programs , reverse violence alarms , and serving time in prison .
Norway's only criminology program gives you a unique insight into public safety, punishment and investigation - a year filled with experiences, insights and new perspectives!
Are you curious about punishment, crime and the legal system ? In this line you will get a thorough introduction to laws, regulations, types of punishment and crime , and see how the legal system affects both offenders, victims and society. You will learn about the causes of crime, stigmatization, human rights, ethics and norms, and explore how different forms of punishment work in practice – both in Norway and internationally.
You visit courts , attend trials , talk to police and other stakeholders, and see how prisons and measures such as crisis centers, protection programs , and reverse violence alarms work in reality. Through practical cases, role-playing, and our own courtroom, you will receive training in critical thinking, analysis, and stress management .
You can also take a certified security guard training - completely free of charge, and work on strengthening both physical fitness and confidence in demanding situations.
In February, choose a study trip to Florida, Lanzarote or Singapore , or stay at school for a more affordable year. The trips combine inspiration, academic insight and memories for a lifetime .
This will be a year of mastering, friendship, and valuable expertise that you will take with you on your journey – both personally and professionally.

Hello! 👋🏻
My name is Elinor and I have been teaching here at Trondheimsfjord Folkehøgskole – Fredly since 2020. Before that, I worked for many years in the Norwegian Correctional Service, both as a prison officer and with training of new aspirants. I am a trained prison officer and teacher, and have a master's degree in vocational education.
I believe in learning through practice – learning by doing! I enjoy sharing experiences and creating engagement in the lessons.
At Trondheimsfjord you will get challenges, a sense of accomplishment and a year you will never forget. I love being active, and you will often find me in the mountains – both summer and winter.
Ready for an exciting and educational year? I hope to see you then! ⛰️✨

"At Criminology we have a varied everyday life with both theory and practice. We learn a lot about punishment and legislation, and get to know what it's like to work in the police and prison. It's also interesting to learn how the entire legal system in Norway works."
