Cultural understanding
- AFRICA

“Africa went from being an unknown continent to being the most amazing place I have ever been!”
Do you want to help discover new places? Get to know food, music, art, language and dance? Values, mindset? Do you want to experience a little more than an ordinary tourist on a trip?
On the Cultural Understanding course, you get to help decide which countries the tour will go to and what we will do there. Should we go rafting, feed giraffes, snorkel, swim with dolphins, go on a safari or go to a music festival?
How can we get to know people and their culture? Learn to cook local food, make drums, dance? Visit religious and historical sites? Join us for an exciting year!
This is what we do in the Cultural Understanding line:
We travel on a 3-4 week trip to the countries in East Africa that the class chooses. Here we can experience culture, music and dance, nature, big cities, countryside, rafting, snorkeling, chalk-white beaches with turquoise seas, elephants, mountain peaks, sun, exotic food and fruit, and new friends and acquaintances.
The trip is in principle voluntary, but we recommend everyone on the line to join since much of the program is linked to the trip. Alternatively, you can travel to Lanzarote or Singapore, or stay at the school to get a cheaper school year.
An important part of the trip is visiting the Strømmestiftelsen 's work.
The school collaborates with the Strømmestiftelsen. They have various projects in East Africa aimed at children, youth and adults. We meet young people the same age as the students in the Strømmestiftelsen's bonga groups, which are groups for young people who have dropped out of regular schooling. Through conversation and activities we get to know each other. Maybe we help arrange activity days at kindergartens and schools, kick football, or visit a hair salon.
When we're not traveling to Africa, we're doing...
Physical activity and exercise; ball games, ice skating, water skiing, laser tag, go-cart, bowling, African dance and drumming, mountain hikes, caving, climbing
activities with adult education in Skaun municipality
a little drama and role-playing
trip planning
communication from the trips with text, photos and film
photography course
Swahili
cultural understanding
communication
cooking
visits to/from various aid organizations

Hello! 👋🏻
My name is Silje and I have worked at Trondheimsfjord Folkehøgskole since 2013.
I love meeting new people and experiencing the world with others.
Travel is a big part of me, and I have worked in Mongolia and traveled to Africa many times. For me, it is important that you feel safe, seen and cared for. I want you to have a year where you experience community, new challenges and exciting experiences, whether we sit around a campfire and chat, or explore the world together.
I have studied aid, social work, African studies and diaconia, and I am passionate about understanding people, cultures and how we can make a difference – both for ourselves and others.

"The best thing about the course was the trip to Africa, and the understanding I gained that I need to be more grateful for what I have. Everyone was more open to each other, including us. It was like we were all one big family! I recommend everyone to go to Cultural Understanding – Africa!"
- Student Rachel Bonsaksen

"The visit to the UN and the teaching about poverty and sustainable development has been very interesting. Making new friends and going on trips in safe surroundings has been important to me."
